Dementia communication: 3 scripts that work

familiesMemory CareFamily

Simple phrasing that reduces resistance and helps with bathing, eating, and leaving the house.

When memory changes, logic often increases stress. The goal is calm cooperation—not winning an argument.

Script 1 (bathing): “Let’s get you comfortable.” (Then offer two choices: morning or afternoon.)

Script 2 (meals): “I made something warm.” (Serve first, explain later.)

Script 3 (leaving the house): “We’re going to get a little fresh air.” (Keep it short, pair with a familiar jacket/shoes.)

Tip: offer choices, not open-ended questions. And keep instructions to one step at a time.

We can help create dementia-friendly routines and caregiver cues that feel natural in your home.
