Questions to ask a home care agency
If you’re interviewing agencies, bring this list to every call. The goal is to predict what care will feel like on day 1 and week 2—not just “are you available?”
Fast filter (2 minutes)
- What’s your minimum visit length and typical scheduling expectations?
- What happens if a caregiver calls off—who fills it and how quickly?
- How do you match caregivers (skill-fit + personality-fit)?
- Who is my point of contact and how do I reach them after hours?
Coverage & reliability
- What’s your plan for call-offs and last-minute coverage gaps?
- Do you have an on-call coordinator? What hours?
- How do you handle holidays, weather, and high-demand periods?
Matching & caregiver consistency
- How do you match caregivers to ADLs, mobility, dementia, and routines?
- Can we request a meet & greet before the first shift?
- How do you keep coverage consistent (avoid a “revolving door”)?
Supervision & quality
- How do you check in during the first week?
- How do you update the plan if needs change?
- How do you handle concerns about safety, communication, or performance?
Communication with family
- How are updates shared (calls, texts, notes)?
- How quickly do you escalate changes in condition or safety issues?
- What information do you collect up front so we don’t repeat ourselves?
Scope clarity (included vs not included)
- What’s included in non-medical home care vs what requires a clinical provider?
- Do you support post-hospital routines (first shower, transfers, meals, mobility limits)?
Pricing clarity
- What’s the hourly rate range and minimum hours?
- Any weekend/overnight differences, fees, or cancellation rules?
- How do schedule changes affect pricing?
